The American children of a British couple held captive by Afghanistan's ruling Taliban regime appealed Wednesday to President Trump in a video, asking for his help in securing their release.
Britons Peter and Barbie Reynolds, both in their 70s, were detained by the Taliban on Feb. 1 this year alongside their American friend, Faye Hall, and their Afghan interpreter, as they traveled to the British couple's home in Afghanistan's central Bamiyan province, the Reynolds family told CBS News.
Faye Hall, an American citizen, was released last Saturday into the custody of Qatari officials who helped broker her release and return to the U.S., just as the Reynolds family marked eight weeks of their parents being in Taliban captivity.
Suhail Shaheen, the Taliban's ambassador in Qatar, told CBS News that Hall was released as a "goodwill gesture" and that they "want to have positive relations with (the) U.S. and other countries."
Peter and Barbie Reynolds have lived in Afghanistan for 18 years, where they run a registered organization that provides teacher training to local schools and education reform that integrates Islamic values, their family told CBS News. They have Afghan passports that allow them to travel freely in and out of the country, and their work is known and supported by local Afghan elders and police, the family said.
This morning, something extraordinary happened. Faye Hall was abruptly taken from her prison cell - taken by force once again from Barbie reynolds’ side.
Hours later, Faye contacted her American family—this time from a safe place. She said she was now in the care of Qatari officials. They told her they would get her passport and belongings to her, and If all goes as planned, she’ll be flying home to the United States tomorrow.
We are so thankful that Faye is out of the hellish conditions of Pulecharki prison, but she is not truly safe until home in the USA.
We are earnestly hoping and praying for Faye’s full and unhindered freedom—and for the swift and safe release of Peter, Barbie, and their interpreter to follow soon after.
The promised court verdict did not materialize for Peter and Barbie. With Eid beginning on Monday, March 31st, the earliest possible rescheduling will be delayed by at least another week.
In the past 24 hours, a deeply distressing development has unfolded.
Barbie and Faye were summoned to the gate of their compound. As they have from the beginning of their detention, both women stood firm: they would only leave if all four detainees were released together. That unity has been unwavering for eight weeks.
But in a shocking escalation, authorities arrived with handcuffs — both male and female guards — and attempted to forcibly remove Faye. When the women resisted, clinging to each other and to the chain-link fence, the guards resorted to violence. They were dragged, kicking and screaming. Faye was ultimately ripped from Barbie’s arms and thrown into an unmarked car.
Faye was taken to court and told she was being released. When she pleaded for Peter, Barbie, and their interpreter, she was told: “We are only dealing with you.” She was then forcibly silenced, and returned to her cell. She remains in prison with Barbie.
Peter and Barbie endured another 5-hour round trip to court. After two hours with the judge—who, frustratingly, asked all the same questions—they were relieved that this time their answers were recorded and translated into English.
They’ve now learned that four judges will decide their case, with a verdict expected on Wednesday or Thursday this week.
Peter and Barbie weren’t allowed to speak, but they saw each other across the room and mouthed “I love you.” Peter remained shackled to his interpreter, and Barbie was handcuffed to Faye the entire time.

Peter and Barbie were taken to court today. The men and women arrived separately on different buses.
Conditions were described as “brutal” and likened to “what I imagine hell is like.”
Despite the scheduled court appearance, they were told at the last minute they would not be seen by the judge. Authorities initially gave no clear reason, then stated that the judge had been changed.
They are hoping to get their court appearance early next week.
They were taken to court in chains, and Barbie looked frail and found it hard to stand, possibly anaemic. Peter too is not in good health. They were all cuffed via hands and feet whilst there. Although they could see each other they were not allowed to talk.
The Judge didn’t speak or understand any English but understood their friend a bit - who speaks a different Afghan language to him.
Over the past few weeks, the interrogator has come strongly at them, but he proved to be an honorable man, and concluded and reported back to the authorities that there was no evidence of any crime committed.
They are returning to the court on Saturday. It was going to be Monday, but Barbie told the Judge that Faye’s daughter’s baby is due next week and she needs to get back to the US right away. So the judge moved it to Saturday. (This is promising and a demonstration of some mercy)
The hope is that rumours of their release are true.
